The mission was to create a memorable and engaging summer event for all 600 employees at Microsoft in Sweden – but with the social distance in mind which the times of coronavirus disease require.
At times when employees at Microsoft and staff at most other companies in the world have been working from home, it has been even more important to create social digital events for colleagues to meet up. The objectives were in this case to strengthen the team spirit, to empower and engage, and just let the employees socialize in a fun and easy-going way.
We created the Microsoft Summer Jam – a virtual summer event for all employees in Sweden. It was streamed from a summery and sunny location with parts of the management team together with the famous host Kodjo Akolor, Chef Sigrid Bárány, and the DJ and Singer Charlie King. The event was filled with a lot of different activities. For example:
The Picnic sandwich challenge,
where three members of the management team cooperated with a coworker via Teams to create the best sandwich by using ingredients that the audience had chosen. The Love bombing, where Kodjo Akolor read tributes to coworkers, which the employees had sent in. The PowerPoint roulette, where three members of the management team had to talk for one minute about a messy PowerPoint slide which they had never seen before. The stoneface challenge, where three participants had to try to not laugh while they had to endure a bunch of one-liner jokes. The slow jam, where the CEO talked about the past year accompanied by a slow tune and backup singers. It needs to be heard to be believed.
The virtual live event was a huge success, with over 280 engaged employees tuning in.
